Mom of the Month - Joya Cummings

Meet Joya, our September Mom of the Month. Joya is wifey to Forrest and mama to Caden, Coby and Carter. Not only does Joya take care of her beautiful family, but she also takes care of many animals as a veterinary dermatologist. Joya has participated in almost all of our Fit4Mom programs. She jumped head first into Body Back, then began attending Strides and Boost regularly and is now running in her third session of Run Club!

Joya, we are so happy to have you and your sweet family as part of our village!

Hometown: Dayton, Ohio

Tell us about your family: I have been married to Forrest for almost 9 years. He is a Louisville native. We have a 5 year old son named Caden and boy/girl twins Coby and Carter who are 2 years old. We also have an 8 year old Lhasa Apso named Guri, a 17 year old cat named Cappuccino, and two Betas who’s names change frequently.

Current/Previous career: I am a veterinary dermatologist at Animal Dermatology Clinic here in Louisville. I also work in our satellite clinics in Lexington and Evansville, Indiana. I treat ear and skin disease in dogs, cats and the occasional horse and pocket pet.

What was your childhood ambition? From a very young age I always wanted to help animals. I took in all the neighborhood strays and we had tons of critters- a snapping turtle that lived in our attic bathtub, gold fish, cats, a dog and a rabbit. At one point, my sister and I had 14 cats! My current cat is the last of our cat “breeding”.

What does motherhood mean to you? Being a mom has been the greatest joy of my life. I always wanted a big family but my husband, being the youngest of 7, only wanted two children. When we found out during our second pregnancy that we were having twins, I felt like God knew what my heart had always wanted. I still get tickled thinking about that surprise blessing. And I try to remember that I wanted this chaos during the times when the kids are being absolutely rotten.

What is the furthest you have been away from home? Hong Kong, China for a world veterinary dermatology conference.

How did you find FIT4MOM? I found Fit4Mom at the Middletown Kroger! LOL. I actually met Tiffany Stout at Kroger when I was hugely pregnant with the twins. Our boys started playing with each other in one of those fancy car grocery carts. She invited me to Stroller Strides and added me to the Village on FB. I didn’t attend a single class until I decided to join Body Back 18 months later almost a year ago when I was struggling to get my life together after the twins.

How has FIT4MOM changed your life? I struggled to get back into shape after the twins. I worked out 5-6 days a week and was still overweight, exhausted and stressed. I joined Body Back because of all of the success stories I was seeing on FB and I felt like something had to change. I needed help! Fit4mom has allowed me to get back into shape, to join a community of likeminded mamas and to achieve goals I never thought I could reach. It is truly the best form of peer pressure I have ever succumbed to. The accountability, encouragement and ever-changing work outs keep me motivated to reach my goals.

Favorite exercise: High Knees (LOL) and anything cardio. I also love a good curtsy lunge.

Proudest moment: Running my second half marathon (my first was a few months before getting pregnant with the twins) and finishing in less than 2 hours, much faster than my first half!

Tell us something about yourself that would surprise us: I took a video onboard the infamous United flight to Louisville 2 ½ years ago that became viral. I did several local and national television and print interviews. It was my 5 seconds of fame. LOL! =)
